Hawaii Macula and Retina Institute Attends American Academy of Ophthalmology Conference in Las Vegas

Drs. Kokame, Lai, and Wee attended the annual American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) conference in Las Vegas in November of 2015. The American Academy of Ophthalmology is the largest national organization of ophthalmologists with international membership. There were over 28,000 participants in attendance this year. This meeting serves all sub-specialties of ophthalmology providing instructional courses, updates in treatment and management of ophthalmic disease, and advances in the field of ophthalmology.

 

Dr. Kokame was an honored attendee and a part of many educational programs. He served on the Advisory Board for Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy (PCV). At this Advisory Board meeting, Dr. Kokame was advocating for the increased recognition of PCV in the United States as well as educating the retina experts about differences in management of this complex disease that can lead to better visual outcomes. To further the awareness of PCV, Dr. Kokame was an invited guest for “An Interview with the Experts” for the American Society of Retina Specialists. He also gave an instructional course on the diagnosis and treatment of PCV for AAO members with his international colleagues Dr. Timothy Lai, Dr. Adrian Koh, and Dr. Won Lee.

Dr. Kokame also served as a Retina Poster Guide Discussant, and led interested audience members through the poster presentations. He enjoyed catching up with his colleagues from all over the mainland about their various projects.

 

Lastly, Dr. Kokame hosted the 6th Gass Fellowship Society Meeting, a society he started with other Gass fellows to honor the memory of Dr. Donald Gass. This was the 10th anniversary of his passing, and the attendees shared many stories and presentations about the great life and legacy of Dr. Gass.

 

Dr. Wee and Dr. Lai were also in attendance of the annual AAO meeting. Dr. Wee attended the Gass Fellowship Society Meeting and was a part of the interesting discussions of the many case presentations. He also attended lectures at the Retina sub-specialty day as well as the Heed Society luncheon and an advisory board meeting for the Alcon LHA510 clinical trial, a trial that Dr. Wee is a Primary Investigator for at HMRI.

 

Dr. Lai attended the Ron Michels 25th Anniversary Meeting, honoring the late Dr. Ron Michels. Dr. Ron Michels was an esteemed vitreoretinal surgeon who contributed greatly to the field of surgical retina through his teaching and continued interest in research. Dr. Lai continues to serve on the selection committee for the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation.

The physicians of the Retina Consultants of Hawaii continue to strive for excellence in care for their patients in Hawaii. It is through their continued motivation for education and research that they are able to bring the latest treatments and surgical techniques to their vitreoretinal practice.
