Dr. Gregg Kokame, medical director of the Hawai’i Macula and Retina Institute, was invited to present 4 different lectures at the 33rd Congress of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO). His presentations included: Macular Hole Surgery – History from Gass Theory to Modern Day Surgery, An Updated Treatment Paradigm for the Treatment of Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy, An Unusual Case of Spontaneous Healing of Photoreceptor Layer, and Long Term Stability of Suture-Fixated Posterior Chamber IOLs. All 4 lectures were presented at major symposia concentrating on retina during the PAAO Congress. This was Dr. Kokame’s first time to speak in Peru and in South America, as he has spoken in Central America, Asia, Europe and throughout the USA. The presentations by Dr. Kokame were well-received and encouraging for Retina Consultants of Hawaii to continue the journey of creativity and inquisitiveness that leads to new findings and new research.

Dr. Kokame was also able to enjoy some of the culture and adventures that Peru has to offer. He and his family made it to see the amazing remains of the Incan civilization in Machu Picchu. They were able to make the trek up to the top of Wayna Picchu, which is the mountain behind Machu Picchu that stands at just under 9,000 feet above sea level. He toured through the Amazon where he was able to see the wildlife in the world-famous jungle.
