Spotlight on Hawaii at the 19th Retina International World Congress 2016
In July of 2016 Dr. Gregg Kokame, director of the ARGUS II “bionic eye” program at the Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii and at Retina Consultants of Hawaii, was invited to speak on the first experience in the Asia Pacific region with the ARGUS II at the Retina International World Congress (RIWC) in Taipei Taiwan. This included two patients of Asian heritage including a Chinese and a Japanese patient, who both live in Hawaii. The meeting was a great success with 680 participants from 24 countries participating in RIWC 2016.
This meeting includes patients with retinitis pigmentosa, and doctors involved in many aspects of care of retinitis pigmentosa patients. One of the most exciting symposiums was the bionic eye presentations, which had a full house for the presentations. This included Dr. Kokame’s presentation on the epiretinal implant Argus II, and other presentations from Germany on a subretinal implant approved in Europe.
The meeting was somewhat overwhelming as there were so many patients who hoped to be the next one to obtain the ARGUS II implant.
